What is Mediation?
Mediation is a confidential and voluntary process by which a neutral and independent third party helps the parties to reach an acceptable resolution to their dispute. Because the parties are responsible for providing solutions and mutually agree a way forward, they take real ownership of and buy into solutions.

When Would Mediation Be Effective?
The Mediation Process
Stage 1 - Individual meetings with all the parties to the dispute to establish, in confidence, the issues. The Mediator needs to gain a good understanding of the events or behaviour that has led to the conflict. All individuals involved and managers as appropriate attend.
Stage 2 - Assessment of the best way forward and preparation for setting up a joint meeting, by the Mediator.
Stage 3 - Joint meeting to hear the issues, explore concerns and then build agreements. The Mediator helps the parties to reflect, exchange and move on. The focus switching from past behaviour or events to 'doing it differently' in the future. The Mediator and parties to the dispute attend.
Stage 4 - In some cases it may be appropriate to hold a follow-up meeting to assess the effectiveness of agreements and make any necessary amendments. The Mediator and parties to the dispute attend.
Ideally stages 1 to 3 should take place over a period of two days, with time for reflection after the initial meetings. The timing of any follow up meeting is set to allow time for agreements to start making an impact.
